Align’s architects praised as small development wins national award
A development of nine homes designed by architects at Align Property Partners has won a national award.
The homes at Whorlton Meadows have transformed the site of the former Swainby and Potto Primary School, which closed its doors in 2017.
The two, three and four-bedroom properties were designed by architects at Align, North Yorkshire Council’s multi-disciplinary building design consultancy.
With each house sensitively designed to remain in keeping with the village and reflect its picturesque North York Moors National Park setting, the development was recently crowned Best Design for Three Storeys or Fewer at the 2024 Housebuilder Awards.
The managing director of Align, Ron Walton, said: “Our architects did a magnificent job in designing the houses at Whorlton Meadows and I’m delighted that this development has been held up as an outstanding example on a national level.
“As a company, we are passionate about great design and this successful scheme was the result of some excellent collaborative working between all parties involved.”
Sustainability was at the heart of the development’s design, with EV chargers, air-source heat pumps and high levels of thermal insulation all included to minimise the use of fossil fuels.
The homes were built with a mix of natural stone walls, hedges and fences to ensure it reflected the tranquil village of Swainby, which is in prime location for walking in the National Park.
The development was built by Brierley Homes, North Yorkshire Council’s housing development company.
